As part of the requirements for completion of the USM Archives and Special Collections Graduate Certificate program, I will be completing an archival practicum with the Invisible Histories Project this fall semester. Director of Outreach & Lead Archivist Joshua Burford is directing and supervising my work on a project to survey LGBTQ archival collections at Mississippi repositories and to document the descriptive metadata attached to these collections. Additionally, I will be mining names and topics in digitized LGBTQ newspapers.
IHP collects and preserves LGBTQ culture and history in the South, with partnerships at archival repositories in Alabama, Georgia, and most recently, Mississippi. The University of Mississippi in Oxford is the local partner in housing collections.
Each week during my internship, I will be posting in this blog about my process and experiences. I am fortunate to have found a practicum opportunity that so closely matches my interests in archival studies--community archives, descriptive metadata, and the preservation of the experiences of communities that historically have been misrepresented or ignored by traditional archives and historians. I'm relatively new to Mississippi. Growing up in Wyoming, the distance and isolation from resources and the lack of awareness of or access to the LGBT community specifically was a burden. I am excited to see how IHP grows and connects to the community in Mississippi, and I'm looking forward to learning more about local Queer history.
